Victor Nicholas Abatino, (Vito) passed away in home hospice care March 26th, 2018.
Vito was born in Modugno, Italy, June 20th 1927. The son of Francesco Abbatantuono and Maria Martino. He had three siblings; Alfonso, Maria and James. Vito and Alfonso moved to America in 1950, in search of the American dream. After arriving in America, he shortened his surname to Abatino, to better assimilate in his new home. Landing in New York, he took whatever job he could find and went to night school to learn the English language. From New York, he and Alfonso moved to Chicago, and opened their first restaurant together. Vito moved to California in 1961 and opened Vito’s Pizza King in Burbank. It was there he met Mary, his first wife, and mother of his children Victoria and Nicholas. In 1970, they moved to Ashland, Oregon and opened Vito's Pizza. In 1972, he built his final restaurant on the corner of North Main and Granite. He proudly served the valleys best Italian food, until his retirement in 1980. Who could forget Vito spontaneously breaking into song toward the end of the evening at his restaurant?
Vito loved gardening, golfing, caring for his fruit trees, and fishing. He was a wonderful storyteller and enjoyed reliving his childhood in Italy. In 2007, he married his wife Joann, three days after his 80th birthday. He was thankful for her company and loving care during his last years.
Vito was preceded in death by his first wife Mary, his parents, Francesco and Maria, his brother Alfonso, and his sister Maria. He leaves behind his wife Joann, his son Nicholas Abatino, daughter Victoria Nuss (Ken), grandchildren Jameson Nuss (Brittney) and Angela Webb (Jeff), and great grandchildren, Elianna and Ayden Webb. He also leaves behind his stepchildren, Andrea, Joni, Shannon and Dan, along with 12 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
