Velma Leone McArthur, 79, passed away at home in Central Point, Oregon on October
27, 2017, surrounded by family. She was born in Nowata, Oklahoma on June 30, 1938 to
Evert and Opal Curren and was the eldest of five children.
She spent most of her childhood living in Oklahoma and New Mexico, but while in her
teens, her family moved to Carson, California. At the age of sixteen, she married the love
of her life, Gene Burns McArthur, and they remained married for 43 years until his death
on October 23, 1998. They had three children.
She is survived by her son, Evan (Teri) McArthur (Medford, OR), her daughter, Sandi
(Jerry) Sutterfield (Central Point, OR), eight grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren,
three great great grandchildren and her brother, Bobby (Ruth) Curren. She was preceded
in death by her parents, husband Gene, daughter Laurel Jean Grow, and her three sisters,
Billy, Belva, and Jeannie.
Velma and Gene moved from California to Central Point, Oregon in 1990 where she left
an everlasting impact in her family's life. She was the center of her family circle and her
home was always opened to anyone who needed a place to stay.
Not only was she busy being a wife, mother, grandmother and friend, she found time for
her arts and crafts. She played the organ, worked on leather, chalked stoneware and for a
short time, while living in California, she taught sign language in her store for the hearing
impaired. Her store was named "Sign of the Times". She loved to cook and bake
especially during Christmas time where she loved having her grandchildren and nieces
over to bake Christmas cookies. Velma will always be remembered as a loving wife,
mother, grandmother, sister and friend.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Hillcrest Mortuary in Medford, OR on
Saturday, November 11, 2017 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory
can be made to the charity of your choice.
