Francis William Thompson
Francis William Thompson passed peacefully May 15, 2015 in Portland surrounded by loved ones at the age of 97. He was born May 3, 1918 in Edna, Kansas to William Roland Thompson and Mammie Mae Triebel, the oldest of five children. Francis grew up on a farm and enjoyed farming and ranching throughout his life. He joined the Army in mid-1941 and received training in the field artillery. Francis was subsequently posted to the 41st "Sunset" Infantry Division serving in the South Pacific the remainder of the war. After being honorably discharged in 1945 in California, he married his sweetheart, Pearl Mae Jones. They soon moved back to Kansas where Sharon Kay was born, and later to California where Anna Marie was born. Shortly after Anna was born, the family moved to Central Point, Oregon where Francis worked in a lumber mill, as a finish carpenter, and retired from Jackson County. After Pearl passed in 1990, he married Nelda Stephens in 1995; she passed in 2005. Francis then moved to Portland to live with his daughter Anna.
Francis was predeceased by his parents, both wives, and his siblings Wayne, Jane, Melvin, and Betty. He is survived by his daughter Sharon Riessland, her son Todd, and his other daughter, Dr. Anna (Knecht) Barclay and her husband Bob, and her daughter Kathleen and her spouse Jamie.
Francis was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite, Hillah Shrine Center, and Eastern Star, all in the Rogue Valley. A memorial service will be held at the Medford Masonic Temple at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 22, 2015. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Medford. Remembrances may be made to the Hillah Shrine Patient Travel Fund.
