Ruth Louise Curtis

Ruth Louise Curtis (née Hoeme) was born May 17, 1927 to Max and Elizabeth Hoeme in Chicago,
Illinois. She graduated from Steinmetz High School and worked at Marshall Fields as a comptometrist.
Her yearning to move ‘out west’ was realized in 1952. San Francisco and Pacific Coast was an exciting
and beautiful place to live, a welcome change from Chicago’s climate.
Ruth met Morris Curtis at a Roller Rink in 1953. Curt (or “Kirk” as she called him) had just been
discharged from the Army and was an Oregonian. The two were soon engaged and married on May 15th
1953 in Chicago. Their honeymoon was on Moonstone Beach, California and they fished their way
north, settling in Medford, Oregon that Fall. Ruth and Curt purchased a home on one acre outside of
Eagle Point in 1955 and raised their family there.
Ruth’s favorite place was almost anywhere outdoors. When she wasn’t in her garden one could
find her, Kirk and the boys at/on the lake fishing or water skiing or at the coast clamming, deep sea
fishing and camping. She enjoyed cooking and baking, especially the seasonal recipes her immigrant
parents taught her. Her favorite indoor activities were worship, Bible study, choir, altar guild, fellowship
with the ladies of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and listening to The Lutheran Hour.
Ruth slipped and fell the day after her 94th birthday, fracturing her hip. She later succumbed to
complications from that injury and dementia.
She is survived by three of her four sons and four grandchildren. Her sister Hilde predeceased in
2015, husband Curt in 2016 and son David earlier this year. Ruth will be interred together with Curt in
the Eagle Point National Cemetery.
