Rose E. Sweet

April 16, 1915 — February 25, 2011

Rose Evelina Sweet, 95, of Talent, beloved wife of the late Melvin Sweet, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother,great-great grandmother and friend, went home to the Lord on February 25, 2011. She was born April 16, 1915, in Dalton Neb., to John Quincy Adams Brown and Nora Ementa Gebhart. Rose married her sweetheart, Melvin Enos Sweet, on June 30, 1933, in Kimball, Neb. They moved near the Siuslaw River in Oregon and then settled in Talent in 1954. On Holton road, they made a home where she welcomed family and friends. She took great pride in being a mother and homemaker. Rose enjoyed many crafts and projects and she spent a great deal of time making gifts and decorations for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed reading, playing card games and a good game of Aggravation. Rose often hosted card parties with friends and spent hours playing lively games of Pinochle. Rose felt blessed with nine grandchildren and referred to them as the light of her life. She had a place in her heart for each of them and hoped they would grow up knowing God and being kind and thoughtful. Her grandchildren loved spending time at her home playing with her and grandpa, learning games, and being read to. Rose loved music and enjoyed traveling. Many evenings were spent listening to Melvin play the organ or accordion with their children. She rarely missed the Lawrence Welk Show and was fond of watching The Price is Right. Rose and Melvin spent many days salmon fishing, clamming and camping. She had many memorable trips but her favorite was the trip they took to Bryce Canyon National Park. Rose and Melvin were baptized together and members of Phoenix Church of Christ and celebrated over 57 years of marriage. Rose is survived by her children, Don (Alice) Sweet and Diane (Allen) Egger; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Rose was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Sweet; her daughter and son-in-law, Rose Jean (Jeanie) and Melvin Shilts; and her two sisters, Viola Robbins and Barbara Diederich. A celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, March 6, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at the West Main Church of Christ, 1071 West Main Street. Gerry Flock will officiate.
