Robert Kane Van Valkenburg passed in his sleep on Wednesday September 14th to join the lord. He was 84 years old. He was born on Sept. 10, 1927 in Long Prairie, Minnesota to dentist Lester K. Van Valkenburg and wife Agnes. He grew up in long Prairie and was lifelong friends with many of his classmates from Long Prairie High School, where he from graduated in 1945 to join the Navy.
Bob served two years in the Navy in San Diego, then worked for National Cartridge, Hughes Aircraft, and as a bellman and fishing guide in Yellowstone Park. He later moved to San Jose, California, where he worked as a chemist for IBM for 33 years.
He enjoyed numerous hunting, fishing, and camping trips with his family and friends throughout his lifetime. He loved to travel, share stories, and spend time with his beloved wife, Mary, of 48 years and all of his family.
He retired from California to Medford in 1999 to be close to his family, and spent many wonderful years in close proximity to his son and daughter and their families, including his four grandchildren. He will best be remembered by them for his laugh, smile, and genuine character.
Bob was preceded in death by his sister, Leslie Van Valkenburg Bear. He is survived by his wife, Mary of Medford, son, Jon K. (Edie) Van Valkenburg, MD of Medford, and Susan (Joe)Fortino Volk of Medford, sisters Gretchen Vallette of Del Mar, CA, and Karen (Fred)Thompson of Sonoma, CA, and grandchildren Emily and Nicholas Van Valkenburg, and Brandon and Bella Fortino. He will forever be remembered for the loving spouse, father, friend, and "Papa" that he always was.
