Richard Taylor, 85, of Phoenix, Ore., passed away peacefully at home with his wife by his side on Sunday, August 8, 2010.
Richard was born on December 15, 1924, in Henderson, W.Va., to John Taylor and Charlot Shepard Taylor. He grew up in Gallipolis, Ohio. In 1943, he enlisted into the U.S. Army and was a member of Merrill's Marauders, clearing the Burma Road. He was discharged in November 1945, at which time he returned to Gallipolis and married Edna Mae Coulter.
Richard worked as a fruniture upholsterer, turning old, worn-out furniture into beautiful new pieces. He later opened his own business, Taylor's Upholstering, and continued to work until becoming disabled at the age of 53 after suffering a heart attack. In 1999, Richard and Mae moved to Phoenix, Ore., to be near his daughters and their families.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, gardening, and feeding his backyard birds.
Richard is survived by his wife of 64 1/2 years, Mae; daughters, Sharon Taylor Snowden, of Sam's Valley and Debbie Taylor Coach, of Tacoma, Wash.; son-in-law Stehen Snowden; brother, Raymond Taylor; sister-in-law, Phyllis Taylor; grandchildren, Sean Clonch, Michael (Ashley), Jonathan (Roni), and Casie Snowden; great-grandchildren, Melanie, Tyler, Taylor and Kyle Snowden; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers, Otis and John Taylor.
A service will be held Friday, August 13, 2010, at the Eagle Point National Cemetery, in Eagle Point, Ore., at 1:00 p.m. Arrangements are being handled by the Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary in Medford, Ore. www.hillcrestmortuary.com
