Raymond E. Maddox
A celebration of life for Ray Maddox will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday December 22 at Hillcrest Memorial Park Chapel, 2201 N. Phoenix Rd, Medford with a reception to follow at the Royal Mobile Estates club house, 1055 N. 5th St, Jacksonville.
Ray Maddox, 87, of Jacksonville passed away on December 13, 2016 with his family by his side. He was born April 20, 1929, the third of eight children born to Rupert and Zita Singler Maddox. He was a lifelong resident of the Rogue Valley.
On October 24, 1950 Ray married Avis Hanscom and together they had four children, Rod, Ron, Becky and Bob. In 1995 he married Janet Johnson who passed away in 2007.
Ray attended Medford schools until the age of 15 when he joined the Army Air Corps. After 19 months in the service, his company was preparing to ship out when the war ended. After returning home he began work in the construction trade. He was a building contractor for most of his life, building homes all over the valley. In the late 1970s he started ReMon's Wood Specialties in Shady Cove, a cabinet and door shop.
After retiring, he and Janet were snowbirds for many years, spending their winters in Arizona and Mexico where they met many dear friends. After Janet's death in 2007 Ray settled back in the Rogue Valley where he enjoyed delivering food to the homebound seniors for Food and Friends with his sister Kareen.
Ray's hobbies included golfing, especially when he could come home with a handful of balls that he found on the course, fishing with the good old boys and a lucky Keno card. Most any day you could find him walking around Jacksonville gathering up walnuts, picking asparagus in the orchards, hunting mushrooms and enjoying being outdoors. He always had a sparkle in his eye and a goodie in his shirt pocket just in case the grand kids stop by. Ray often commented, "I've had a good life."
Ray is survived by his four children; Rod (Erna), Ron, (Vicki), Becky (Gary) McTevia all of Jacksonville, and Bob, (Lorie) of Medford; one brother Terry Maddox, three sisters; Kareen Powell, Zita Smith & Diana Walker; his grandchildren Jocelynn, Tyler, Rachel, Natasha, Nathanael, Anna, Alicia, Hayley and Jack ; 11 great grandchildren; four step children; Teri Feffeley, Bill (Becky) Johnson, Rick (Kelly) Johnson, and Shelly Stipp; step grandchildren; Erik, Heather, Melyssa, and Dalton and 3 step-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Janet, and brothers Bud and Dace Maddox, and sister, Barbara McKee.
Donations in his memory could be sent to Food and Friends, 2860 State St, Medford, OR 97504.
