Orcutt William “Jack” Frost, Jr.
3 June 1926 – 2 July 2022

Orcutt William “Jack” Frost, Jr. was born 3 June 1926 at Cloquet, MN to Orcutt William and Agnes Harriet (Williams) Frost, and died 2 July 2022 in Medford, OR. He grew up in Minnesota, Mississippi, and Illinois, graduating from Highland Park (IL) High School in 1944.

Immediately after high school, Jack was drafted into the army to serve in World War II. He rose to the rank of Sergeant, serving as clerk typist with the 6th Army Alamo Scouts in the Philippines and in the Intelligence Corps with the Army of Occupation in Japan.

Upon discharge, Jack attended the University of Illinois, B.A. 1949, M.A., 1950, and PhD., 1954. He taught English at Willamette University, Salem, OR 1954-1963 and English and the Humanities at Alaska Methodist University (later Alaska Pacific University), Anchorage, AK 1963-1991. He was granted Professor Emeritus status at APU in 1991. He also served as an exchange professor at Nagoya Gakuin University, Nagoya, Japan 1969-1970. He published many books, including Bering: The Russian Discovery of America in 2003.

Jack’s quick wit and sunny disposition brightened every room he entered. He was an excellent listener, with a kind word for everyone. He loved teaching the adult Sunday school class at church.

Jack also had a passion for tennis, often winning matches against younger, faster opponents thanks to his self-proclaimed “old age and treachery.”

Jack married the love of his life, Mary Denison Bills, on 22 June 1954. They recently celebrated 68 years of marriage.

He is also survived by their children Carol D. Frost (Eric Nye), William O. Frost, Susan M. Frost (Michael Bennett), and Robert W. Frost (Cathleen Clore); grandchildren Charles Nye, Elizabeth Frost Bennett, Ellen Nye, John Frost Bennett, Elisa Frost, William Frost, Nathaniel Frost, Laura Frost, and Noah Frost; and brother Allan Frost. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Griffith Frost and David Frost, and sister Margaret Morton.

A private graveside service and interment will be at Eagle Point National Cemetery, Eagle Point, OR
