Lenore Verone Payne
Lenore Verone Payne was born May 14, 1914, in Iola, Kans., to Arthur Christopher Leigh and Serena Jean Harland Leigh. She passed away peacefully on April 19, 2008, in Ashland. She would have been 94 in May.
Lenore eloped with and married Delmar Emerson Payne, the son of Daniel Emerson Payne and Grace Emily Sutton Payne, on January 1, 1933.
Delmar and Lenore was a part of that special generation that went through the great depression and WWII. Delmar, a carpenter, went where the jobs were and at first, left his family in Iola, but on one of those trips, and while at a boarding house, the owner's daughter offered to keep him company at night. The next day he came home and bought their first trailer. Delmar was determined to keep his family together. During the war, Delmar worked on the Hanford Engineer Works, at Hanford, Wash., in 1943, and at the end of the war was at Vancouver, Wash., where he worked on liberty ships at Kaiser Ship Yards.
Lenore followed her husband, living throughout Southern California and Arizona while he worked for Bectal Construction for over 25 years. She held various jobs at local school and hospital cafeterias. After retirement, they eventually settled in Medford, Ore., where they lived for over 18 years. After Delmar died, Lenore moved to Ashland, where she lived until a fall earlier this month.
Delmar and Lenore loved camping with the local RV club. She also enjoyed playing pinochle with the Medford Mobile Estate Coffee Klass. They lived in over 35 mobile homes, owned over 50 cars, and many RV's in their 66 years together.
She is survived by two sons, James Leigh Roy, of Marshfield, Mo., Jack Emerson, of Redding, Calif.; daughter, Janet L. Patterson, of Ashland; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Delmar; one son, Delmar Lloyd; brother, Byron Victor; two half brothers, Voloney and Glade Leigh; and one great-grandson.
