Remembering the Life of Laurel Dohman
Laurel Dohman passed away Tuesday, October 29, 2013 in Redmond, WA. Her long life was a blessing to all who knew her. Laurel was born in Platte County, Nebraska to LeRoy and Sarah (Summers) Moran. Laurel was raised on the family farm and attended school in Pingree, North Dakota.
Laurel married Bert Pitra. Her only child Ramona Lou was born in 1934. Between 1936 and 1938 they lived in North Dakota, California, Iowa, and Illinois, settling in California in 1939.
During WWII Laurel worked for Douglas Aircraft. After the war she worked at Merle Norman Cosmetics and Ajax Hardware.
Laurel married Kenneth Dohman on January 5, 1963. Laurel and Ken lived in Hacienda Heights, CA until their retirement in 1974. They drove north to Oregon stopping in several cities and picked Medford, Oregon as the city to call home. Laurel and Ken made many wonderful friends. They enjoyed dancing, playing cards, potlucks and gardening. They loved to travel and enjoyed many trips to see their families in North Dakota and Minnesota.
Laurel and Ken joined the Medford Senior Center and began volunteering there. Laurel volunteered over 30 years. In 2002 she received The President's Lifetime Volunteer Service Award from President Bush for serving over 4000 volunteer hours.
After Ken's death in 2002, Laurel continued volunteering six days a week at the Senior Center until January 2013. She began each day working crossword puzzles. She also spent considerable time reading, watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune (knowing the answers before the contestants).
Laurel is survived by her brother Robert (Nora) Moran of Pingree, ND; three step-children Gary (Evelyn) Dohman of San Clemente, CA; Donna (Charles) Parker of Moreno Valley, CA and Judy (Carl) Rutschow of Upland, CA ; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Laurel was very thankful for her many good friends.
