Jon Van Valkenburg, MD,
Jon Van Valkenburg, MD, 54, passed away Monday, July 22, 2019, while fishing on the Rogue River with his son in Shady Cove, OR. He was a long-time resident of Medford, devoted to his family and to serving the community as a family practice physician at the Medford Medical Clinic, and then Providence Medical Group.
Jon was born in Los Gatos, CA and grew up in San Jose and Morgan Hill, CA. He graduated from Live Oak High School (Morgan Hill) in 1983, then went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from the University of CA at Davis. He met his wife, Edie, in high school and they married in 1989. Following college, he went on to earn his medical degree at Tulane Medical School in New Orleans, LA. He joined the armed forces in 1988, and completed his residency at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, WA, followed by 4 years at Fort Campbell, KY, where he served as an officer and family practice doctor. Jon and Edie had two beautiful children, Emily (24) and Nicholas (21), with whom he loved spending his time coaching in sports, enjoying the outdoors, and traveling. He left the Army as a Major, and established the Medford Medical Clinic with his partners in 1999. Jon loved practicing medicine and spending time with his family and friends. He was committed to providing quality medical care to the Rogue Valley working alongside his fellow dedicated health care professionals at Providence Stewart Meadows Medical Center, where he was Director of the Urgent Care. He was an avid cyclist, and also enjoyed fishing with his son, backpacking, hiking, skiing, rafting, traveling, and small craft distilling. He was especially happy when cheering on his favorite team, the San Francisco 49ers.
He leaves behind his wife Edie, daughter Emily, son Nick, mother Mary, sister Susan Volk, many sisters and brothers-in-law and nieces and nephews and countless beloved friends he loved dearly.
There will be a public memorial service celebrating Jon's life on August 19, 2:00 PM at Shepherd of the Valley Catholic Church, 600 Beebe Rd. in Central Point.
