Harley Orlan Dickerson
Harley Orlan Dickerson, 67 of Central Point, Ore., died of a heart attack on Sunday, March 29, 2009. Harley was born Jan. 30, 1942 in Alton, Mo., and was one of five sons born to the late Harley Orlan Sr. and Dorothy (Smith) Dickerson, of Doniphan, Mo. Harley graduated from Ashland High School in 1960. He received a degree in education from Southern Oregon University in 1966. He later went on to receive a master's degree in administration. Harley taught for over 31 years, most of those years were with the Central Point School District. He retired from the Eagle Point School District as an administrator in 1998. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, loved horseback riding, and was a member of the Jackson County Sheriff's posse. Given his love of sports, he spent many years coaching at all levels of youth and high school sports, and more recently was assistant coach for the Southern Oregon University women's softball team. Harley ("H" to teammates and family) played college baseball and football at Southern Oregon University and played adult fast pitch softball. His many seasons playing men's AAA fast pitch softball in the Rogue Valley, included numerous years as an all-star catcher for the "Malot Mudhens," of Medford, Ore. He was inducted in the Medford and the Oregon Sport's Hall of Fame. The family dusted off over 91 trophies. Survivors include his three children, Debra Rivers, Angela Sandblast and Bryan Dickerson; seven grandchildren, Katelyn Rivers, Blake Rivers, Amanda Rivers, Reed Sandblast, Kenna Sandblast, Hailey Dickerson and Jordan Dickerson; and his four brothers, David Dickerson, Jerry Dickerson, Jim Dickerson and Ken Dickerson.
A memorial service will be held Friday, April 10, 2009, at Hillcrest Memorial Park Chapel, 2201 N. Phoenix Rd.
