Cary Thoresto Sammons, age 96 years, passed Monday, March 1, 2016 in Medford, Oregon. He was born April 29, 1919 in Elkhart, TX to John Monroe Sammons and Jettie Mae Walston Sammons. He was one of nine children.
As a child he helped his mother pick cotton and enjoyed possum hunting with his dog Jimmie. His mother remarried and moved to Cripple Creek, CO. There he worked with his stepfather in the gold mines. In 1941 he married Martha Vanetta. They had three children; Kathy, Janita and Dwight. They moved to Denver where Cary bought & sold cars. He went and graduated welding school then worked for Remington Arms Co.
The family moved to Portland, OR where he worked in the shipyards until he contracted pneumonia and had to leave. They moved back to Denver where he and a friend opened a car lot. In the early 50's they moved to San Bernadino, CA where he opened another used car lot and later an auto upholstery business. Cary learned to fly and enjoyed many hours in the air. About this time along came Jasper his pet monkey who's antics enlightened many a fond memory.
In 1958 Ne married Irene Lindseth who was a nurse and originally from Erskine, MN. They had a daughter Deanna. In the following years they moved to Santa Rosa, CA where they ran another used car lot. They later moved to south Texas where they bought and sold real estate. In 1975 it was off to Mesa, Arizona.
During this time they purchased a summer home in Westport, WA. where they enjoyed many salmon fishing and crabbing trips. The Westport days were some of his happiest times. In 1991 they moved to Winston, OR then to Glide then on to Eagle Point where Cary enjoyed feeding the ducks on the creek. In his spare time he bought-repaired and sold lawn mowers. In 2012 he moved to Farmington Square with advancing Alzheimer's disease.
Cary is survived by his wife Irene, children; Kathy Levy, Janita Henry, Dwight Sammons, Deanna Bebeau, grandchildren; Ray Hagy, Marla Hagy, Kimberly Hagy, Donna Flynn, Darlene Fink, Amber Jo Smith and Tai Sammons.
Cary was a brilliant man who lived a wonderfully varied and interesting life. A special thank you to the staff of Farmington Square for their loving care.
