Artie Belle Hammonds, 91, of Medford, Ore., passed away Thursday, April 8, 2010, at her home, surrounded by her children.
She was born May 28, 1918, in Cape Fair, Mo., to Bob and Tina Carney. Artie married the love of her life, John Hammonds, on October 15, 1935. They settled in Oregon with their children in 1948. They were married for 57 years.
Artie worked seasonally, sorting fruit for Pinnacle Packing Co. for 42 years. Her positive attitude and energy made her a welcome volunteer at local nursing homes. Artie was an excellent homemaker and seamstress, often designing her own patterns. She loved music and dancing, fishing and camping, traveling, reading and playing games. Artie was a member of the Old Time Fiddlers Association, Women of the Moose, and attended Valley Bible Fellowship.
Artie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John; both parents; brother, Lindell Carney; sister, Bobbie Condon; son, Lowell Hammonds; adopted niece, Shirley Hammonds; and granddaughter, Shawn Marie Redwine.
She is survived by her son, Junior (Loretta) Hammonds, of Estacada, Ore.; daughters, Wanda Perry, Doris (Dean) Essary Tibbits, and Sandra (Joe) Ellison, all of Medford, Ore.; brother, James Walker Carney, of Crane, Mo.; sisters, Martha Dunn and Rosie (Ralph) Emmert, of Medford, Ore.. She was also blessed with 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild.
Always cheerful, smiling, and never at a loss for words, Artie was passionate about life and her family. Her strong spirit, ease of forgiveness, beauty and love inspired all who had the honor of knowing her.
A service will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. Donations in her honor may be sent to Asante Hospice. Arrangements by: Hillcrest Memorial Park & Mortuary, Medford, OR. 541-773-6162 www.hillcrestmortuary.com
