Arlene Ruth Lucier

August 3, 1940 — August 3, 2018

Arlene Ruth Lucier, age 78 years, of Central Point, Oregon, passed away August 3rd, 2018 from complications following surgery. She was born September 27th, 1939 in Medford, Oregon to Ralph and Violet Hooper. Arlene grew up on E. 11th St. in Medford with her Mom, Dad and younger sister Judy. Summers were spent camping and fly fishing the Upper Rogue and they were activities she loved. Don’t think for one minute she was a gracious winner if she out fished you, because she wouldn’t let you forget the occasions it happened! While in high school she began working as a bookkeeper in her father’s radiator business. She had a head for numbers and needless to say she was a good student!
Arlene Graduated from Medford Senior High School in 1957 and has continued to stay in contact with many of her classmates. In October of 1957 she married Thomas Griffiths. They had 3 children together Cathy, Robert and David. The couple later divorced. Arlene continued to work over the years as a bookkeeper for several local companies in the valley such as Paulsen and Gates Furniture, Sabroso Fruit Company and Albertsons. Finally retiring to stay home and care for her dear mother Violet.
In August of 1990 Arlene married Robert D. Lucier after a 4 year romance. The couple have been together 32 years and both proudly say “We’ve never had a single fight!” Bob and Arlene shared many adventures together. They welcomed 4 grandchildren into their lives, Tanya, Elizabeth, Christopher and Joshua. Arlene was a hands on Grandma and Wow, she loved spending time with her kids! While staying home both Arlene and Grandma Vi would spend afternoons with her grandsons Chris and Josh, working in the fern garden, having picnics on the patio, and teaching them to play cards. There were also camping trips, day trips to the beach and Shopping! The boys have many dear memories of their Grandma!
Arlene liked to travel when possible. Her Daughter Cathy moved out of the valley following high school and her Mom remained active in her life, visiting them in Washington, Wisconsin and Brazil. Arlene was there for significant events: Cathy and Doug’s Wedding, Elizabeth’s Birth, graduations, baptisms and many other times. The visit to Brazil by Mom and Bob was especially memorable. While on a boat tour on the Amazon River, we stopped to see regional animals. A monkey jumped on Mom’s shoulder and she thought it was cute. Then it stuck its hand in her water bottle and pulled it out with a splash! Mom laughed and ask me if I wanted to hold the monkey. I told her she could hold it for me!
Arlene enjoyed many hobbies over the years including ceramics, where she made nativity scenes for many family members and several churches. She went on to take drawing and painting classes and tried to give Thomas Kinkade a run for his money! Later a friend from church gifted Arlene a stuffed sheep and that started a whole new hobby of collecting sheep!
After her Mother Vi passed away Arlene said “The Lord has called me to do an important service” and she began many years as a Providence Hospice worker. She gave many families some much needed support and made many dear friends in the process.
Arlene loved the Lord! She often said her life began anew the day she was baptized in the Illinois River. She never missed a chance to tell everyone of God’s love! Her other great pleasure in life was her church family, bible study and prayer group. She loved the fellowship and the beloved friends she found there.
Arlene is survived by her husband Bob Lucier, sister Judy (Dieter) Trost, daughter Cathy (Doug) Walborn, son Robert (Brenda) Griffiths, son David (Dorothy) Griffiths as well as her grandchildren Tanya, Elizabeth, Chris and Josh. Her presence in our lives will be dearly missed!
